A Fall Journey Through Korea: Finding Inspiration and Recharge

This fall, I took a much-needed short trip back to Korea. It had been a while since my last visit in the summer of 2021, and I found myself longing for the familiar sights, sounds, and flavors of a place that still feels like home in so many ways. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect—growing up in Korea, autumn was my favorite season. But with busy schedules in the fall and winter seasons here in the States, I rarely had the chance to visit during this time of year. It had been almost two decades since I last experienced a Korean autumn.

I began my journey in Seoul, a city that never seems to stop evolving. There’s always something new to see, yet its old charm remains intact. The weather was surprisingly warm compared to what I remembered from my childhood. Most of the jackets I had packed ended up being unnecessary. I spent my mornings wandering through the narrow alleys of Jongam-Dong, where I was staying. There’s something incredibly peaceful about Seoul in the fall—a rare moment of stillness amid the city's usual hustle and bustle.

Food, of course, played a huge part in my trip. I made sure to savor all my favorite seasonal dishes—spicy tteokbokki from my childhood spots in Eunma Sanga, comforting soojaebi in Samcheong-dong, and late-night alley snacks paired with a glass of soju. I also indulged in soothing bowls of samgyetang. Each meal felt like a warm embrace, a nostalgic reminder of home and the simple joys of Korean cuisine.

Some of the highlights of my trip included a sunset hike at Bukhansan National Park, a serene night spent at Jogyesa Temple, and visiting Do Ho Suh’s exhibition at the Art Sonje Center. I also had a lot of fun wandering around Seoul's vibrant neighborhoods—my daily step count averaged 13,000 steps or more!

I also had the chance to reconnect with old friends and family. We spent hours catching up and talking about our great memories. It’s funny how time seems to stand still when you’re with people who know you so well. Despite the years that have passed, the bond remains unchanged. These moments of connection reminded me of the importance of slowing down and taking time to nurture relationships that matter most.

As the trip came to an end, a wave of gratitude washed over me. This journey wasn’t just about exploring places or savoring delicious food; it was about finding moments of stillness in the chaos of daily life. It reminded me why I create art in the first place—to capture fleeting moments of beauty and share that feeling with others.

I feel recharged and inspired. The vibrant colors of Korea’s autumn, the warmth of its people, and the peaceful moments I experienced are all things I want to channel into my upcoming work. Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes to spark new ideas and remind us of what truly matters.
